Fine Rugs For A Lifetime And Generations To Come
For over 2500 years, fine, handwoven rugs have been used in the East by nomads and villagers for warmth and beauty. In modern times, they have graced homes with their art and luxury. A fine hand-knotted rug can be a legacy purchase to last generations. The information contained in this section of our site offers simple and basic advice in the event of an accident.
Materials Used For Fine Hand-Knotted Rug Washing
Fine hand-knotted rugs are generally made of all-wool, silk, or a combination. These types of rugs are extremely durable and consistently out-perform other materials used in recent times. Unlike other fibers, wool and silk are much more resilient, clean better and stays clean longer.

Could I ruin my rugs by washing them at home?
Washing an entire rug at home will always carry a risk. In order to do it safely, always look at the care instructions, either on a still-attached tag or the manufacturer’s website. You can also reach out to Elegant Rug Services and we will be happy to answer any questions. In general, it’s worthwhile to clean thin, inexpensive rugs at home because the cost of professional cleaning can be more expensive than the rug itself. But thicker or more valuable rugs are risky to DIY, so proceed with caution, or reach out to Elegant Rug Services headquartered in San Jose, CA for an over the phone / text / video call assessment at no charge.
Not all rugs can be washed at home, especially extra-large, thick, antique, or heirloom ones. We emphasize that it’s important to gather whatever information you can about your rug’s material and the type of care it needs, so that you don’t inadvertently introduce any mildew issues. With at-home washings, low-pile wool rugs—especially multicolor ones—will likely bleed their colors. Some bleeding may not bother most rug owners, but it is a risky proposition in general. Feel free to reach out for guidance and information, we are always available to help with all your rug washing and rug care needs.
